June 30: 3 Signs Your Insurance Needs a Mid-Year Refresh
The end of June marks an interesting moment on the calendar — you're exactly halfway through the year, which means six months of life have passed since most people last thought seriously about their insurance. For some, not much has changed. For a surprising number of NJ residents, quite a bit has — a new car, a move across town, a job change, a growing family — and their coverage hasn't kept up with any of it.
Insurance works best as a living document, not a set-it-and-forget-it transaction. It should reflect your actual life: the car you're driving now, the home you're living in now, the income you're earning now, and the people who depend on you now. When those things shift — and they almost always do over the course of six months — your policy needs to shift with them. The problem is that policies don't send you a reminder when they stop fitting your life. That's on you to catch. And that's exactly what a mid-year review is for.
The first sign you're due for a refresh is a change in vehicles or address. A new car or a move to a new neighborhood are two of the most common triggers for a policy update — and two of the most commonly skipped. If you bought a new vehicle this year or relocated, even within the same city, and haven't notified your insurer, your current coverage may not apply the way you think it does. In New Jersey, your zip code directly impacts your auto premium, and your home address affects your homeowner's or renter's coverage. Both need to be current.
The second sign is a change in your income, family size, or employment status. A new dependent, a raise, a job change, or a move from employed to self-employed all shift your coverage needs in meaningful ways. Life insurance that was adequate before a second child may now be insufficient. Health coverage that came through an employer may need to be replaced or supplemented now that you're freelancing. These changes don't announce themselves on your policy — you have to actively catch and address them.
The third sign — the most common and the easiest to overlook — is simply that you haven't looked at your policy since you first signed up. If the last time anyone walked you through your coverage was the day you bought it, there's a very good chance things have drifted out of alignment. Inflation alone has changed what it would cost to replace your home or vehicle at today's prices, which means your coverage limits may now be quietly insufficient even if nothing else in your life has changed.
