Your apartment deserves its own insurance conversation
Moving into a new apartment involves deposits, furniture and utility accounts. Add renters insurance to that checklist. The building owner’s insurance generally does not protect the belongings you own, so ask what a renters policy can provide for your situation.
Count more than your biggest purchases
Walk through each room and list clothing, electronics, kitchen items and furniture. Small purchases can add up. Keep photos and receipts where you can access them if your phone or computer is damaged. Ask how personal property would be valued after a covered loss and whether particular items need separate attention.
Read beyond the monthly payment
Review the deductible, liability limit and any additional living expense coverage. Ask about exclusions and special limits before you decide. If you share the apartment, do not assume every roommate is insured by one policy; confirm who is covered. Give the agent your move-in date and any insurance requirements in the lease so you can arrange coverage before you need proof for the landlord.
