After property damage, prioritize safety, document the loss and contact your insurer for instructions about reporting and next steps.

Begin with safety

If property damage creates an immediate danger, leave the affected area and contact emergency services when needed. Do not enter unsafe rooms or approach damaged electrical systems. Insurance paperwork comes after protecting people.

Document and report promptly

When it is safe, photograph the damage and write down when you discovered it. Contact the insurer or claims contact listed in your policy for reporting instructions. Ask about urgent mitigation and inspections before making permanent repairs. Use qualified professionals where appropriate, retain receipts and follow the policy’s duties after a loss.

Keep one record of the process

Save the claim number, contact names, messages and invoices together. Describe the facts accurately; do not guess at a cause you have not confirmed. Ask how the deductible and coverage review will work, and avoid treating an initial conversation as a payment guarantee. Your policy and the insurer’s investigation determine the outcome. If a contractor asks you to sign documents, read them carefully and clarify questions before committing.

A request does not bind, change or guarantee coverage. Policy terms, limits, exclusions, insurer eligibility and property details determine available options.
