Auto renewal went up in NJ? What to review first

A higher renewal bill is a reason to compare documents, not to cancel coverage in frustration. First establish whether your policy, drivers or payment terms changed.

Read the two declarations side by side

Compare the prior and new policy periods, listed vehicles and drivers, address where each car is normally kept, liability and PIP limits, optional collision/comprehensive, and each deductible. Review fees and payment schedule separately from the full-term premium.

  • Ask which facts or coverages changed since the previous term.
  • Request a like-for-like comparison, then consider different limits or deductibles deliberately.
  • Ask about eligible discounts but never assume a saving before the carrier confirms it.

Avoid a gap while comparing

A new quote is not a replacement policy. Keep your current coverage in place until the new insurer and agency confirm approval and the effective date. If the renewal deadline is near, call rather than relying solely on an online form. New Jersey's official policy guide can help you understand what each coverage means before making a change.
