Using your car for delivery or rideshare in NJ?

Commuting to your job is not the same question as carrying passengers, meals or packages for pay. Describe the actual work so an insurer can tell you what policy or endorsement, if any, applies.

Explain the platform and every phase of use

For rideshare, note when the app is off, when you are logged in waiting, when a ride is accepted and when a passenger is on board. The NAIC warns that personal auto policies commonly exclude livery or paid driving and that gaps may occur between trip stages. Do not assume that a platform's insurance protects your own vehicle in every period.

For food or parcel delivery, say what you carry, for whom, how often and whether the work is on an app. Rideshare rules and a delivery arrangement are not automatically interchangeable; ask your insurer about your actual activity.

Questions to ask before taking a paid trip

Ask what is covered for liability, PIP and damage to your own vehicle in each phase, which deductible applies, and whether an endorsement or separate commercial policy is available. Obtain the applicable policy language and confirmation from the insurer before relying on coverage. An online quote request by itself activates nothing.
