Start with what has changed
Fall is a useful time to look at your home and your insurance together. A renovated kitchen, a new roof, a finished room or a change in who lives at the property can affect the questions your agent needs to ask. Make a short list of changes since your last policy review rather than assuming last year’s information still describes your home.
Review the policy and the property
Gather your declarations page, renewal notice and records of improvements. Ask your agent to explain the dwelling limit, deductible and how a covered loss would be settled. Then walk around the property: look for loose railings, blocked gutters, damaged steps and branches near the roof. Insurance and maintenance serve different purposes; fixing a known problem should not wait for a claim.
Create a simple follow up list
Write down three items to resolve before November: one maintenance task, one coverage question and one document to update. If you own a two-family home or rent part of the property to someone else, make that clear during the review. The right discussion begins with how the building is actually used.
