New Jersey requires auto insurance, but not every compliant policy offers the same protection. The state describes a Basic Policy with limited benefits and a Standard Policy with more choices.

Where the choices differ

According to NJ DOBI's comparison, bodily-injury liability is not included in the Basic Policy by default, though limited optional coverage is available; the Standard Policy offers selectable liability limits. The Basic Policy includes property-damage liability and PIP at limited levels. Standard offers a wider range of limits and uninsured/underinsured motorist options that the Basic Policy does not include.

  • Compare liability for injury and property damage, not just the monthly payment.
  • Review PIP, lawsuit options and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage with the official state chart.
  • Collision and comprehensive may be available as options; neither should be assumed included.

Make an informed selection

Consider the drivers in your household, financial obligations, assets, health coverage and what you could pay after an accident. An agent can explain the quote and the insurer's actual terms, but no page can select the right policy for everyone. State limits and options can change; use the current official comparison before choosing.
